This new Alpha disc from il Giardino armonico and conductor and ensemble founder Giovanni Antonini, La Passione, unites two of Franz Joseph Haydns Symphonies, Nos. 39 & 49, with Willibald Glucks Don Juan ballet in recognition of the then newly gestating idea of individuated dramatic expression in works of music and its expression in these mid 18th c. compositions. It was in the 1760s (after the first staging of Glucks Don Juan) that Haydn began his first dramatic symphonies. I find it very interesting to bring together these Gluck and Haydn works.
