Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most famous Japanese artists, and the essence of the Ukiyo-e ("floating world") style. He as well is one of the great draftsmen of the world.
Hokusai was a self-skilled artist until 1778. After that year, he probably went on to study with the academic painter Kano Yusen. His introduction to the Rimpa School in around 1796 was a important point in his career. He quickly developed a name as a famous painter using the name SÅri. From this time, Hokusai also often signed himself, GakyÅjin ("the man mad about painting") Hokusai.
Hokusai had a long career, but he produced most of his important work after age 60. Only 15-volume collection Hokusai Manga was a book heaving with nearly 4,000 sketches of animals, people, objects, etc. The old artist lost everything in a fire at his lodgings in 1839 and devoted the last ten years of his life to drawing more and more supernatural subjects, such as tigers and mythic creatures.
