Three days before leaving home to become a mail order bride, Sylvie Hastings, age 17, experienced a family tragedy. After being kidnapped then rescued by the local Bannock Indians, her reputation was in ruins. Her intended rejected her and left her destitute.
Abel Hill, age 19, had a plan for his life: save his money, buy his own place then find a wife and start a family. He impulsively offered his hand in marriage to Sylvie after her intended rejected her. He soon discovered the expense of taking on a wife and two little girls; his one-room bachelor cabin needed to be stocked with food for the winter, his family needed clothes, the kitchen needed everything ... then came the first doctor bill. His savings was dwindling.
The local gossips thought Sylvie was good only for saloon work and many in town wouldnâ€™t make eye contact with her. She thought Abel regretted his impulsive proposal and feared he would ask for an annulment.
Abel felt like a failure as a father to the little girls, neglected Sylvie for work and worried about money to support his new family. They soon drifted apart.
It takes a misunderstood overheard conversation to set a little girl running off in the woods during a snow storm to bring Sylvie and Abel together, realize what was truly important and make a new plan to secure their dreams.
