BMOP/sound salutes one of its city's native sons with Irving Fine: Complete Orchestral Works, released in honor of Fine's centenary in December 2014. Irving Fine (1914-1962) was the leading light of the 'Boston School' of the 1940s, contributing to both an increasing body of American concert music and a musical community centered in local artistic and intellectual centers such as Tanglewood, Harvard University, and Brandeis University. This disc displays Fine's lyricism, depth, and precision as well as his lively charm and sense of humor. From the marching song Blue Towers and the whimsical miniature Diversions, through spirited orchestral pieces Toccata Concertante, Notturno, and Serious Song, the collection culminates with Fine's 1962 Symphony, a complex and sophisticated work completed just before his untimely death.
