John Blow: Symphony Anthems
An often overlooked figure, John Blow was a colleague, friend, and mentor of Purcell, and deserves to be acknowledged for the major part that he played in the flourishing of music that came after the Restoration in 1660. This is the first recording by New College Choir under the direction of Robert Quinney, and it features three world premiere recordings of symphony anthems, as well as several ceremonial pieces which were composed for the coronation of James II and the consecration of St. Pauls Cathedral. In addition to the aforementioned works, this release presents the first performance of a newly reconstructed verse anthem in more than 400 years. St. Jamess Baroque accompanies the New College Choir, performing on period instruments for a truly genuine performance.
