Joyce DiDonato and Antonio Pappano â€“ at the piano rather than on the conductorâ€™s podium â€“ opened the 2014-15 season at Londonâ€™s Wigmore Hall with a dazzling programme of song, emphasizing Italy and the USA. Recorded live on this 2-CD set, the two artists were described by The Times as â€œmezzo diva supremeâ€ and â€œgolden maestro and piano accompanist to the starsâ€ The first item on the programme was Haydnâ€™s dramatic cantata Arianna a Naxos (which, back in 2003, also launched DiDonatoâ€™s debut recital at Wigmore Hall). As the Guardian wrote, DiDonato excelled in presenting â€œthe abandoned heroineâ€™s progression from grief to fury with all her vocal skills to the fore and Antonio Pappano â€“ rarely heard these days as an accompanist, but an absolute master of the art â€“ seconding her every gesture.â€ The Times described the interpretation as â€œincandescent â€¦ Daring vocal pirouettes, vivid acting, with dynamic swings, amazing breath control.â€ Then came two songs by a composer who has played a defining role in Joyce DiDonatoâ€™s operatic career â€“ Rossini (her unforgettable collaboration with Pappano on Il barbiere di Siviglia at Covent Garden is captured on a Warner Classics DVD 5099969458194 â€“ and four luscious late-Romantic numbers written in 1908 by the little-known Neapolitan composer Francesco Santoliquido.
