According to the critics of the day, Friedrich Kalkbrenner (1785-1849) was, with Hummel and Moscheles, one of the most acclaimed and respected pianists of his era. Indeed, He was a very prolific composer, publishing nearly 200 opus numbers, mostly dedicated to his instrument. The 3 Sonatas Op. 4 (1809) clearly show Beethovens influence, mostly in terms of language and expressivity, but also though less so technical difficulty. Pianist Luigi Gerosa has recorded two well-received CDs for Dynamic, both featuring world premiere performances of works by Schröter and Kalkbrenner.
