This innovative study examines the responses of early-twentieth-century pioneers to â€œthe Landâ€ of Palestine. Early Zionist historiography portrayed these young settlers as heroic; later, more critical studies by the â€œnewâ€ historians and sociologists focused on their failures and shortcomings.
