Extra Long-Staple Combed Cotton Today, cotton fibers are divided into three classes, short (up to 1 1/8-inch long), long (between 1 1/8 and 1 1/4-inch long), and extra-long staple or ELS which is between 1 3/8-inch and 2 inches long. The longer the fiber, the softer and more durable the final product will be. This is why ELS types of cotton are considered the premium.
Manufacture process The cotton is handpicked to ensure that only the highest quality fibres are selected, before being combed to remove imperfections. The fibres are then twisted together to create a strong, smooth thread that won't tangle through being worn or washed. This twist makes it a supremely clean yarn, though we still pass it over a flame to remove any overhanging ends. The yarn is then double spun to remove any remaining impurities. When you see "combed cotton" you know that the fabric is softer and more durable and less likely to pill. Items made from combed cotton, due to the extra processing step, are usually a bit more expensive than items from cotton that is not combed.
