Lilo & Stitch: Island Favorites
Here's a collection that assumes, to some extent correctly, that kids can't get enough of shooting the curl with the spunky Hawaiian girl and her chili pepper of an alien pooch. Instead of limning the story soundtrack-style, this CD trots out strictly tropical treats. Several, including Collin Raye and the Jordanaires' "Rock a Hula Baby" and Lisa Loeb's "My Little Grass Shack," are pop-slanted covers that are just slick enough to spark school-kid shimmy sessions. A couple of originals, most notably Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu's "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" and "Hele Mele No Lilo," come straight from the soundtrack, and the rest are old treasures. Pioneer Mouseketeer Annette Funicello's "Pineapple Princess" sounds weird even by '60s standards, but Nilsson's psychedelia-tinged "Coconut," Harry Belafonte's "Island in the Sun," and Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawai'i" trip an instinct to pull out the puka shells in anybody ages 6 to 60. Favorites is a Hawaiian souvenir hand-selected for little kids and the longboarders who love them. --Tammy La Gorce
