This special tapered Wall of Fire grate solves smoke problems and dramatically increases heat output in temperamental Rumford fireplaces. Our high efficiency grate allows a magnificent wall of warmth producing fireplace embers to develop at the base of the grate while firewood burns slow and controlled above. The vertical design initiates a completely self-feeding fire which promotes a cleaner burn. Uniquely located at the extreme rear of the fireplace, our grate forces smoke to hug the rear wall of the fire box, eliminating smoke from spilling into the home.
TR-7 Rumford fireplace grate dimensions: 27.5" front width, 12" rear width, 15" deep (front to back), 19" tall. Constructed of 3/4" solid steel bar.
Fireplace size requirements for the TR-7 grate: Works great in a typical Rumford fireplace with a firebox measuring 12" across the back wall, 36" across the front, measuring 12" in depth at the floor, and a minimum front opening height of 30" to allow adequate clearance to easily load firewood onto the grate. Works well in similar shaped fireboxes also.
Note: The total depth of the grate at the base is 15" measured from the rear of the grate to the tip of the center leg. The long center leg is essential for positive grate stability. Please make sure that there are no raised obstructions in the center of your firebox floor such as an ash dump hatch that would interfere with the grate's center leg.
Fireplace construction requirements for the TR-7 grate: It is important to understand that our Rumford grate is a one sided unit. This means that the burning firewood is positioned between the grate and the rear wall of the fireplace. Because of this it is critical that the TR-7 grate is used only in full masonry Rumford style fireplaces that were built compliant to modern building codes. Never use this grate in a pre-fab, zero clearance, or metal fireplace of any kind.
