James Rorimer is no longer alive, but the contributions he made during his lifetime are still relevant in today’s modern world. James was a very smart man and he enjoyed his work very much because of the passion he had for the world’s great works of art. Art was a subject that James had been studying since he was a small child and the knowledge he had accumulated over his life time would make him a perfect candidate to serve in a special unit during World War 2.
World War 2 was a very important event in James’s life because of the enormous contribution he would make to minimize the damage that took place. James enlisted to fight in World War 2 and once his skill became apparent to the right people, he would be assigned to a unique roll that took him away from the conflict on the front lines. This assignment was with The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program that was created during World War 2 to save the valuable works of art and cultural monuments that were in danger of being stolen or destroyed.
Adolf Hitler had an evil plan to steal most of the worlds valuable art work and place the pieces he liked on exhibit in his Nazi Museum. All the work that Hitler did not like would either be sold for profit or destroyed to make an example. Hitler believed that cultures monuments and works of art have the power to create patriotism die to the meanings and associations that become attached to them over time.
In 2013 George Clooney produced a movie about the Monuments Men so that he could tell their story. Even though there were over 300 Monuments Men, only a few of them had been featured in this film. The film focuses on the time during World War 2 when the Monuments Men arrived in Europe to find the works of art that Hitler and the Nazi’s had stolen. Matt Damon played the part of James Rorimer and he went through a great deal of preparation to ensure that the character would resemble James as much as possible.
