Antoine Godeau, Bishop of Grasse and Venice, was celebrated in his day for having paraphrased the 150 Psalms of David in 'agreables et faciles' airs for composers. Etienne Moulinie chose to furnish Godeau's paraphrases with a sophisticated musical setting in concertante style, deliberately making them works destined for concert performance. This title featuring William Christie leading Les Arts Florissants was released for the first time in 1980.
