A highly influential figure in the world of classical music, British pianist Dame Myra Hess (1890 -1965) was most renowned for her interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann, but had a wide repertoire ranging from Domenico Scarlatti to contemporary works. One might say she also influenced the world of jazz in a rather oblique way, as she had given lessons in the 1920s to Ivy Brubeck, mother of Dave Brubeck. Hess also did much to improve the moral of the British people during WWII when, with all concert halls blacked out at night to avoid being targets of German bombers, she organized what would turn out to be some 1700 lunchtime concerts spanning a period of six years, and as a reward for her efforts, King George VI awarded her with the Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1941. Presented here is a vintage audiophile recording of a Hess concert, wherein she performs the works of Bach, Scarlati, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Paradisi, Brahms, Debussy and Szymanowski.
