The National Weather Service (NWS) is a Federal agency under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Both NOAA and the NWS are agencies of the United States Department of Commerce (DOC). Formerly known as the Weather Bureau until January 1971, the NWS is comprised of meteorologists, hydrologists, hydrometeorological technicians, climatologists, electronics technicians, computer specialists and management personnel.
