ONI 226 Allied Landing Craft and Ships: World War II Recognition Guide
Originally printed in June 1944, ONI 226 Allied Landing Craft and Ships presents a categorical description of the various landing ships, craft, barges, vehicles and support, supply and repair craft used in amphibious operations during WWII. These include many of the LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel) designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins, whose “Higgins Boats†were used extensively in both the Pacific and European theaters. Created by the Office of Naval Intelligence, which produced an important series of recognition guides for officers and staff, ONI 226 contains numerous data tables, designation information, outboard drawings and photographs. From the “Torch†landings in North Africa to the Normandy invasion, Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima, landing craft proved vital to the success of the Allies. No wonder this book was originally classified as restricted. Now declassified, this high quality reprint is slightly reformatted but presents the original text in its entirety.
