One Student at a Time. Leading the Global Education Movement
This is a study of the leadership challenges faced by those working to advance global educational opportunities. The book discusses how the dramatic expansion in educational opportunities which has taken place over the last century was the result of a global movement committed to advancing freedom and equality. This movement is now challenged by an emerging populist strand which will simultaneously challenge the institutions of democracy, public education and higher education. This context calls for more intentional efforts to cultivate leadership which can take the global education movement to new levels of effectiveness and relevancy. Based on a study of graduates of the International Education Policy Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education this book discusses the ways in which these leaders sustain an ecosystem of expanding opportunity, what impact they have, what challenges they face and what lessons they draw from their experience addressing these challenges. This book will be valuable to education leaders, particularly those working for government agencies, international development institutions, foundations and organizations that partner with public education systems to support all students in developing the competencies that will enable them to become self-authoring individuals and contributing members of their communities.
