Paganini: Variations on One String on Theme by Rossini for Cello and Piano
Theme-and-variation pieces occupya very large chunk of Paganinis compositional catalogue. This particular set of variations was composedon a stirring theme from Rossinis tragic opera, Mose in Egitto (Moses in Egypt) . In the opera, the tune issung by Moses on the shore of the Red Sea, whoprays for deliverance from Pharaohs pursuing army; his prayer is triumphantly answered, and the bad guys meet their doom in the water. Requiring many of the same technical acrobaticsas Paganinis other works, this piece makes a great recital finale or encore!
