Peachtree Woodworking Supply 2 inch Wide Pinch Dogs Made from Solid Steel and Textured for Better Holding Power (10 Pack of 2 inch Pinch Dogs)
As the old saying goes; “you can never have too many clamps” if you’re a woodworker. This holds especially true when it comes to achieving near seamless or tight fitting joinery. While using long bar clamps or pipe clamps to glue up panels will work, sometimes you may need a helping hand or “pinch” in certain cases to get the seem just right. Using pinch dogs to pull your or “pinch” the panel joint together is an old tried and true method that is still commonly used today.
Pinch dogs can be used in two basics ways. The most common method is to tap the pinch dog into the end grain of two boards with one of the points of the pinch dog on one board and the other point of the pinch dog on the other board. The pinch dog has two tapered points that pull the wood toward the center of the pinch dog as it is driven into the wood. The more you tap the pinch dog into the wood, the tighter the fit becomes.
The second method typically takes some planning to be sure that we are not marking up the good side of our workpiece. With your boards laying flat, tap a pinch dog into the flat side of your panel along the seem every couple of inches. Tap in as many as needed to achieve a tight fitting joint. This method is most commonly used on table tops where the pinch dog marks are either concealed by other project pieces or won’t be seen since the marks are out of plain view.
One of the great advantages that pinch dogs have over most any other clamping device is that they are a very economically priced clamp. Typically the come in multi packs which makes owning a lot of these little clamps much easier to swallow than having to cough of high dollars for pipe or bar clamps. Another great advantage is that pinch dogs are tiny in comparison to other clamps. When you’re not using them, simply place them in the corner of a drawer.
The Fulton Pinch Dogs are made from solid steel to ensure long lasting durability and each dog is lightly textured to provide some “bite” so they wont slip out like some of the coated versions you may find. Each pinch dog comes to a tapered point on each side to help pull your stock in toward the center of the pinch dog to give the best clamping results possible. Pack includes 10 each of the same size pinch dogs. Size denotes distance between tapered point tips.
Drive a Pinch dog into an end grain along a wooden joint, doing this allows the steel tapered pinch dog clamps to draw boards tightly together for gluing up panels, table bench tops and more. You can use the Pinch Dogs repeatedly without the worry of them twisting, bending or breaking. Use them to square corners. Pinch Dogs can also be used for column assembly.
