Giovanni Benedetto Platti first entered the service of the Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg as a virtuoso oboist. However, he soon revealed his gifts as a composer, notably in the works he wrote for his patron's brother Rudolf Franz Erwein, an enthusiastic amateur cellist. Platti's Concerti Grossi, derived from chamber works by Corelli, are performed here on this budget priced reissue by the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin. The brilliance of these works show him to be a worthy heir to the great Roman master of the genre.
