Mingus was given absolute freedom on these sessions. The band consists of a pianoless quartet with trumpeter Ted Curson, alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy (who also plays bass clarinet on one track), Mingus on bass and veteran Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond.
