Prison Blues: Authentic Field Recordings of Work S
These recordings were made in the Mississippi and Louisiana State Penitentiaries by legendary Folk and Blues archivists Alan Lomax and Harry Oster. The singers and musicians were all African American prisoners, many of whom remain anonymous. It is hard to find more heartfelt blues performances than the songs featured on this album. If you have ever wondered what it would be like on a chain gang, hopefully you will never get any closer than this. You can literally hear the prisoners cutting trees, and working the fields as they sing these haunting spirituals and work songs. A must have for any serious student of the blues.
