The origin of the fez begins in Ottoman Empire times and continued when the Freemasons adopted it as their headgear of choice. THe exotic headwear became a popular topper to wear in the evening with a deluxe smoking jacket at the turn of the 20th century. The iconic red cylinder with black tassel and insignia grew to become became the Shriner's official and ceremonial head piece. Many American presidents have donned the fez, as has General MacArthur. Some other notable figures who have donned the red cap include Dr. Who, Aladdin, The Turkish and Greek Army, Indonesians in ceremonial occasions, British comedian Tommy Cooper, Ren & Stimpy and last but not least, Morocco Mole.
