Rembetika 2: More Of The Secret History Of Greece's Underground Music
Shrink-wrapped
The first volume, rembetika, greek music from the underground presented a general overview of the genre on record from the 1920s to 1946. Rembetika vol.2: more of the secret history of greece's underground music gathers together a selection of rembetic pieces starting from the very early days of sound recording. All of the sides here are extremely rare. Many have never appeared on cd before, while those that have were either originally dubbed from poor condition originals or are no longer available. Recording of rembetica did not begin in athens until around 1925, stimulated by the presence of many fine greek-ottoman musicians among the over one million refugees from the greek-turkish war who arrived in greece around 1922. However, from the early 20th century, examples of the genre were recorded in constantinople and smyrna by travelling sound engineers from the major companies. While in the usa, from around 1915, a stream of fine material was recorded - aimed at the many thousands of greek immigrants. This collection includes those early recordings.
