He soon joined the militia in the American Revolutionary War and became a senior aide to General George Washington in 1777 and helped run the new Continental Army. After the war, he joined the Congress of the Confederation as a representative of New York but eventually resigned to found the Bank of New York and practice law. He did all in his power to promote the US Constitution and the idea of a strong central government. In this pursuit, Hamilton wrote the Federalist Papers, which helped to interpret the Constitution. Hamilton eventually ran the Treasury Department as a member of Washington's Cabinet. He was a central figure in the Federalist government until he lost the election of 1800 to Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton eventually lost his life to Aaron Burr in a dual and died on July 12, 1804.
