While Dura-Ace is known as the top-tier in the Shimano component line, Ultegra has been known as the workhorse and in some cases the more durable of the two -- it reaps the benefits of technological developments of Dura-Ace without the extra carbon bling. Now, the trickle-down is trickling even further. Shimano's new 105 RD-5800 11-Speed Rear Derailleur now benefits from much of the same top-tier engineering. The new 105 rear derailleur features the same wider pivots as last year's iteration. They are more resistant to flex and twist, which ensures faster, smoother shifting. These were borrowed from the DA group. The new 5800 was updated with a new spring mechanism and cable pitch, which increases adjustability for perfect alignment. The body of the derailleur features more metal and less carbon, which makes it slightly heavier, but the mechanics now eclipse DA from just a few years ago. The biggest difference in the new 5800 is the addition of another cog. Yes, 11-speed componentry has become affordable for the masses. The Shimano 105 RD-5800 11-Speed Rear Derailleur is available in Black in either a Long or Short cage version. The Long cage will accommodate a 32tooth rear cog, ideal for climbing and touring.
