Salt of the Sea Stories told by the Fishermen of Point Judith
I grew up a fishermen’s daughter and spent many years around the docks of Point Judith, RI. My 3 brothers are also fishermen and I loved being around them on the water. The port of Galilee in Point Judith was unique; it was a community back in the 50’s through the 80’s.You knew everyone and they knew you. The older generation of fishermen, looked after the younger ones, whether it was their relation or not. They mentored the next generation of fishermen so they didn’t make the same mistakes they did; they would teach them tricks or give them supplies to help them succeed. It was one large family and even being a girl, I was part of it. I admired these fishermen and loved hearing their stories; when some of the most admired men began passing away I decided it was time to act. In 2006 I began recording stories, and went at it full time in June of 2010. With each character I was more amazed at what they wanted to share. In the end 28 men shared their recollections in their own voice and in their own unique way. Take a trip with these men and experience their trials, tribulations and most of all, their love for the sea.
