Santa Fe Railway 2015 Calendar (Classic Rail Images)
Chartered in 1863, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway s first trains rolled the next year, and the line reached Santa Fe, NM, in 1880. By 1929, at its peak, the Santa Fe had over 13,000 miles of track. Santa Fe Railway captures images of steam and diesel from across this vast system, so famous it was memorialized in a song that won an Academy Award. Do you hear that whistle down the line? (14 × 22 inches, open). January: Santa Fe 544, along with three other units are all running Elephant Style, arriving at Caliente, California, in the Tehachapi Mountains with Train 971; a Richmond, California, to Kansas City intermodal train. It is January 10, 1992, cold, and the fog is getting heavy. Ahead lie 26 miles of steep grades, tunnels, single track with sidings, and one curve after another until the top of the grade is reached at Tehachapi Summit, a mile east of its namesake town. February: It is January 3, 1960 and Santa Fe 2373, an American Locomotive Works (ALCO) Model S-2 sits between assignments at Los Angeles, California, along with another switch engine and 2653, an EMD Model GP-7; all are in Black with Silver Zebra Stripes. This paint scheme was used to enhance visibility. March: Santa Fe 40 is on the point of Train 123, the westbound Grand Canyon Limited, making a station stop at Chillicothe, Illinois, on March 19, 1959. April: Santa Fe 5934 and two other EMD F-45s are the power for a westbound Shooter, as they pass milepost 691, two miles east of Ludlow, California, on April 6, 1972. May: Santa Fe 5000 is working hard with an eastbound freight, coming out of Tunnel 9, starting around the Tehachapi Loop, while a westbound freight sits in the siding at Walong, California, in May 1971. As soon as 5000 s train clears the switch, the locomotives will cross over and the westbound will be on its way. June: Santa Fe 11 and 11A are leaving Chicago, Illinois with Train #5, The Ranger en route Photographed by Tom Harley to Galveston, Texas in June 1947. These E-3 s, an A-B set built by Electromotive and placed in service in 1939, were the only E-3 s on the Santa Fe roster. July: Santa Fe 3898 and 3827, 2-10-2s, and another locomotive are being serviced in Trinidad, Colorado, after returning from a helper turn to the summit of Raton Pass in July of 1952. August: After sitting for over three hours while a broken rail was repaired, Santa Fe 222 and 217 are finally underway eastbound several miles east of Ash Hill, California, on August 21, 1995. This is the Mojave Desert, and even with the cloud cover the temperature is hovering at 120 degrees. September: Santa Fe 5967 is leading an eastbound freight up the Tehachapi Grade, coming through Woodford, California, on September 12, 1988. October: Santa Fe 146 leads a westbound double stack train through the Nelson Tunnel, a mile and a half east of Nelson, Arizona, on October 16, 1997. November: With Warbonnet 18 on the point, the westbound First Section of The Chief is getting ready to depart Dearborn Station, Chicago, Illinois on a 2,223-mile-long journey to Los Angeles, California, in July 1955. December: Santa Fe 5652 leads an eastbound freight through Perea, New Mexico, on January 26, 1975. Perea, located on the Navajo Indian Reservation about fifteen miles east of Gallup, NM, is where the eastbound and westbound Main Lines separate as they pass through the scenic Red Cliffs area, coming back together again near Gonzales, NM.
