â€œHeâ€™s nothing but a kid,â€ said the big man.
â€œMaybe so,â€ said Boot, â€œbut I told you what I saw.â€
â€œWas that before or after you started in drinking Boot? â€œ
â€œSomebody ask him.â€ Looking at me he said, â€œcan you do it again?â€
â€œYou mean shoot a bottle?â€ I ask him.
â€œWell thatâ€™s what you done last night ainâ€™t it?â€
â€œSure I can,â€ I said, â€œbut you fellows must be mighty hard up for entertainment around here.â€
The big man shouted to the bartender, â€œgive me an empty bottle.â€
â€œLetâ€™s go outside,â€ he told me and we walked out followed by every one of them in there. Even the bartender came from behind the bar and followed us.
The big man told another to take the bottle down to the end of the street. â€œBoot you tell him when he gets in the right spot.â€ When it was in place and the man had moved back out of the way the big man turned and asked me, â€œwhereâ€™s your rifle?â€.
â€œDonâ€™t need it for this, â€œI said. Looking down the street I said, â€œthe bottleâ€™s laying different.â€
He turned toward the other men and said, â€œand now the excuses start boys.â€
Not liking his attitude, I drew fired and holstered that Colt before the shards of glass quit falling.
