Sergei Taneyev: Oresteia
Sergei Taneyevs opera Oresteia remains a singular phenomenon in the history of Russian opera, seldom recorded and even more rarely performed. Taneyev, a favored pupil of Tchaikovsky, and later an educator and music theorist who counted Rachmaninov and Scriabin among his students, composed very much of his time with late 19th century Romantic sensibilities at the fore. Oresteia hints at the ancient Greek tales that enthralled Taneyev throughout his life where universal themes of wisdom, revenge, malice and love push and pull with a heady dynamism. Performed by soloists of the Belorussian Theatre along with the Belorussian State Opera Orchestra and choir.
