Shaman: Susan Seddon Boulet 2019 Wall Calendar
Ancient peoples revered nature and attributed sacred or spiritual meaning to all things. To cross the threshold from ordinary reality to the spirit world, shamans sought the aid of guides and guardians who often took the form of fantastical creatures—part animal, part human, and enormously powerful. These higher beings healed the sick, led the departed to the next life, and restored harmony to a troubled world. Shamans communicated with these spirit guides through dream, vision, symbol, and ceremony, wordlessly speaking of the invisible worlds that surround the fragment that is known. From her deep understanding of shamanic tradition, Susan Seddon Boulet (American, b. Brazil, 1941–1997) painted the mythical merging of animal and human into a coherent whole. The twelve inspired paintings here are accompanied by excerpts from Native American chants, prayers, and poems. Pomegranate also publishes Boulet’s work in Susan Seddon Boulet: A Retrospective.
