Q - Livvyâ€™s still on the road. Why Guatemala?

A - In terms of the series, Livvy and SK visit Central America because itâ€™s a natural progression for their characters. In terms of research, itâ€™s a place Iâ€™ve been so there was no road trip involved! More than that though, the Maya cosmos is a surreal fictional landscape. Fantasy, metaphysical, and science fiction writers could learn a thing or two about flights of the imagination from the ancient Maya.

Q - Is the Dwarf of Uxmal real?

A - Oh yes, at least in the sense that the Maya believed in him. Ancient Maya wall paintings and ceramics sometimes depict dwarfs in conjunction with royalty. Small people had a special and elevated status at court. Even here in California Shoshonean groups have the Water Baby. We took a special trip to see Water Baby rock art, and I posted it on my Facebook page.

Q - What was the inspiration for this book?

A - Readers have been fascinated with SK since nearly the first scene in the first book. In fact, for a while, I thought he might run away with the story. In this novel I took some time to get to know him better. Naturally Livvy is growing as well, but his odyssey forms a backdrop against which hers is thrown into sharp contrast. As always, sheâ€™ll lay everything on line when it comes to their relationship.
