The year is 1889 and a distressed Celia Applegarth begs Sherlock Holmes for help. The odious Sir Walter Hardwick of Oakwood Grange has some unknown hold over her father, ex sea-captain Lawrence Applegarth, now MP for Seale Green in Sussex. Celia has been forced to agree to an engagement between her and Sir Walter.
Before Holmes can agree to help her, Inspector Lestrade bursts into the room with the news that Sir Walter has been murdered and arrests Celia. Holmes proves the innocence of the Applegarths but Celia is kidnapped and the great detective realises that he is being diverted away from the source of real danger.
Mycroft Holmes becomes involved indicating that the heart of the plot is a plan to bring England to disgrace in the sight of the world. It takes some time to untangle the coils evil Professor Moriarty has constructed. In a chase from Hampshire to Hull, Holmes is always one step behind. It is not until he reaches the starch works of James Reckitt & Sons in Hull that the full enormity of Moriarty’s scheme is revealed. From that instant, Holmes knows he has no time to lose. Can he save England and its royal family?
