The characters of Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel may have been based on local residents known by the author. The story goes that a Headless Horseman haunted the town of Sleepy Hollow at night, searching for his head which was lost to a cannon ball during the war. One night the town’s only school teacher, Ichabod Crane, has a chance encounter with the Headless Horseman which is still talked about to this day.
