Sonatas
After several successful recordings of harpsichord music by Scarlatti, Soler, and Haydn, Nicolau de Figueiredo turns his musical attention to Johan Christian Bach. The London Bach was such an inspiration to the young Mozart that he actually used some of the sonatas recorded here and transformed them into concertos. With this recording, Figueiredo proves that Johan Christian is all but a secondary composer. Too often he is regarded as a passing stage leading to Mozart, but performed in this way--by one of the best harpsichordists of our times--this music reveals itself as a real masterpiece. As in all Passacaille recordings, Nicolau de Figeuiredo uses a splendid harpsichord made by Emile Jobin.
