No German Christmas celebration is complete without a Stollen - the Christstollen, the King of all Christmas pastries. This yeast-cake is similar to an Italian Panettone, except it is folded and rounded into an oval to represent the infant Jesus in a bundle of swaddling clothes. Oebel Stollen is dotted with a generous amount of sultanas, candied fruits (orange, lemon and citron peel), Jamaican rum and a smattering of hazelnuts then sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Stollen has been made in Germany for over 600 years. Stollen is a yeast bread, like panettone, but denser and actually gets better with time! Ours comes from the Pastry Chefs from Konditorei BrÃ¼der Oebel, KÃ¶ln (Cologne), one of the largest enterprises of this kind with 100 years of tradition.
