Bereavement counsellor Kathryn Stone is given her first assignment: Great Falls Detective Scott Griffin, a former soldier suffering from the early stages of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Kathryn shadows the troubled detective as he delves into a bizarre case, a woman kidnapped for a ransom that her abductors must surely know she cannot pay.
As the case deepens and Kathryn struggles to help the decent and honourable Griffin, so she begins to question the man with whom she shares her life and what secrets lay beyond his lies and deception.
As the abduction case throws light on the lives of Griffin, Stone and those around them, it becomes clear that the abduction is only one part of a wider campaign by a murderous serial killer, and that any one of them could be guilty.
Stranded in a small town, stories are uncovered of forlorn lives all of them wish they could walk away from and start again somewhere else, anywhere else, before they find themselves at the hands of a killer who has no identity and can walk into any life he chooses...
