Charles and Judith take Brett and Sun Bird to the horseraces in Louisville. Charles’ filly, Artemis, turns impressive times and several people try to buy her and grow angry when Charles refuses to put a price on her. Some minor trouble erupts in Louisville when two men attempt to rob Charles’ old friend, Vance Clausen, and Charles is accused of starting the problem and could face disbarment from horse racing by the racing committee. Charles takes Brett with him on a road trip, and they encounter a little trouble along the way. Brett is impressed with the ranches and businesses that Charles has created. Brett likens tent city to a military encampment. Brett proves himself worthy by the time they return to Philadelphia. Brett returns to the Fort and is still unsure of what he will do when he leaves and heads back to the fort. The pressure is on Brett to resign his commission or go with Custer and the 7th Cavalry to force the Indians onto a reservation.â€
