Strategy To See: Strategies for Students with Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment
Strategy To See is for parents/caretakers, educators and medical personnel (including but not limited to TVIs, COMS, PTs, OTs, Speech Therapists, Music Therapists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, low vision specialists and Special Education Teachers) of students from birth to 22 years who have a diagnosis of Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment or C/CVI. Strategy To See offers helpful stories of children with C/CVI, as told by their parent or caretaker, who have increased their child's ability to use their vision by use of specific strategies. Brain plasticity is discussed as well as the importance of early intervention. Specific strategies and techniques are discussed which encourage more efficient and consistent use of vision in this special population. Use of the CVI Skills Inventory & Strategies Worksheet is reviewed with examples of 3 different students with differing visual functioning levels. Development of IEP Goals and Objectives is discussed with regard to each of these sample students. Several printable handouts are provided and resources are noted.
