StreetSmart® Tokyo Tokyo's address system is unique. Few streets are named. Building addresses are not related to streets names and may not be sequential. Addresses are based on city wards (which can measure several sq miles), the chome or subdistrict, and the banchi or block which vary in size and may contain 3-5 buildings. Look for Chome names on telephone or street light poles and the corners of major buildings. A typical address may read as follows: 1 4 8 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo or at times like this: 4 8 Roppongi, 1 chome. The 1 is the chome, 4 is the block number, and 8 the building number. Roppongi is the district, Minatu-Ku is the city ward and Tokyo is the city.
StreetSmart® Tokyo Many say Tokyo has one of the best public transportation systems in the world. It is without doubt the fastest way to get around town. Subway stations and cars are well marked in both English and Japanese. There are 12 subway lines criss-crossing the city and one can transfer freely between them. There are also four private Toei lines with their own fare system. Finding the right exit. Most subway stations are large with multiple and far-reaching exits. Getting the wrong exit at Shinjuku Station, for example, may leave you a mile and a half out of your way. Our maps show all exit numbers and letters in bold black to guide you. Enjoy Tokyo.
