Range, by David Epstein, challenges the reader’s concept of specialization. The mainstream narrative is that generalization is inefficient; You can’t hire a generalist and it is superficial to know a wide range of things without the depth to truly understand them, right? Not according to Epstein. He argues that our problems must be met with a wide, not a narrow, experience. He begins by exploring the opposite of his claim and shows us what we already know; those who train in a single discipline early and often have a high chance at being a superstar in that domain.
This image is only part of a much bigger picture, however. Epstein then reveals to the reader that there are only a few domains where a specialist can thrive and many more where the generalist would be a better alternative; someone with range.
