They provide great leverage and do not damage the bead (as a screwdriver or other improper tool would).
One tip on mounting small tires (or big) when pushing the second bead over the rim use vise-grips clamped on the rim edge
to keep tire bead from rolling off again (both sides) this makes it a very easy job.
