Iâ€™ve spent a large part of my life with nature-based activities of one kind or another. When I was twelve years old, I had an experience that changed my life forever. I was outside, sitting on the grass near an old apple tree, when I suddenly became aware of the life force and Divine energy flowing through the trunk of the tree. The energy seemed natural to me and not at all unusual. I realized the interconnectedness of nature and spirit. It was a transcendental experience! I understood that the Divine presence projected itself throughout nature, and is not confined within the walls of a church, mosque, temple, or any institution.

As the years passed, I became involved with the plant and tree medicines. I learned about sweet grass and its special nature as a sacred medicine plant. Sweet grass is steeped in the history and tradition of many North American aboriginal cultures. When it is used in ceremony and during talking circles, for example, it helps to forge an atmosphere of truth, co-operation, understanding, patience, and respect. The scent of sweet grass lends itself to peace and harmony, and encourages positive vibrations.

I hope the prayers in this book find widespread use around the world. I also hope that people in mainstream religious and spiritual traditions (Christian, or otherwise), examine the prayers with open minds and hearts, and use them in their spiritual work.
