THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW VOLUME 1 CHAPTERS1-5
The Gospel of Matthew is pre-eminently the Gospel of the Kingdom. It presents Jesus, not primarily as Savior, but as the King of Israel, as promised by the prophets. This first of the four Gospels is Jewish through-out. It tells of the Kingdom of Heaven which will be set up right here on this earth, with a tabernacle and a throne from which Jesus will reign over the earth. But in spite of the fact that Matthew wrote primarily for the Jews, we also find truth for the church, even though the church is presented as yet in the future. Certainly this Gospel is the connecting link between the Old and the New Testaments, and its writer makes wide and varied use of Old Testament Scriptures. Matthew associates Jesus with the two outstanding Old Testament covenants - i.e., God's covenant of kingship with David, and His covenant of promise with Abraham. The first volume covers the first five chapters of Matthew's Gospel, ending with the first chapter of the Sermon on the Mount. So extensive and detailed are the teachings Jesus presented in these first five chapters that it seemed inadvisable to include the entire Sermon on the Mount in this first volume so it is continued in Volume II. This series covers 552 radio sermons which were delivered on The Gospel Hour Broadcasts over a period of eighteen months analyzing the Gospel of Matthew verse-by-verse.
