Neal Foster is the captain of a space freighter. His ship, named â€˜Follyâ€™ of all things is a bit odd, but thatâ€™s okay, because so is her captain it seems. Like any captain commanding a freighter, moving things from port to port in a timely manner is what he does â€“ and he likes it boring. Boring as in nothing breaks, nothingâ€™s wrong, everythingâ€™s smooth sailing in the seas of space. Sadly thereâ€™s a fly in the captainâ€™s ointment of piece and quiet. It comes not in the manner of pirates or system malfunctions marooning him in space, but of other things that can keep captains from having time to be bored â€“ especially captains with other things on their minds â€¦

This tale takes place in the Chakat Universe, a universe in which mankind did more than a little genetic engineering on animals before discovering that there were other space-going species out there as well. Other tales of Captain Foster and his Folly may be found on the chakatâ€™s den.
