Polish composer Franz Xaver Scharwenka was one of the most important and popular composer pianists of the late 19th century. He had a major career as a soloist, and toured the USA a total of 26 times. His four piano concertos were once cornerstones of the repertoire, admired by both Liszt and Tchaikovsky. For his third recording on Onyx Classics, pianist Joseph Moog performs Scharwenka's Piano Sonata Op.36 and Tonbilder Op.38, pairing them with Tchaikovsky's Piano Sonata Op.37, Romance Op.5 and Aveu passionne. Moog is fast becoming recognized as one of the most gifted and inquiring of the younger generation of pianists.
