In spite of its lukewarm reception, Tchaikovksy considered his eighth full-length opera, Cherevichki, his 'finest work.' Indeed, the work is filled with luminous orchestral writing, sumptuous arias, frolicsome dances, and humour, but it has continued to languish in relative obscurity. This recording, under the esteemed baton of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, seeks to change all of that with skillful and imaginative performances by the singers, chorus, and orchestra alike.
