One of the most popular western films of the late 1950s (President Eisenhower liked it so much he had it shown on four successive evenings at The White House!), The Big Country won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Burl Ives. It was also nominated for the musical score by Jerome Moross but lost out to Dimitri Tiomkin's 'The Old Man and The Sea'. Despite this, The Big Country remains one of the most readily identifiable soundtracks to any film.
