1991 COMING TOGETHER FOR THE OCCASIONAL QUARTET Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, perhaps the first and only folk super group, are nothing if not sporadic in their collective performances and recordings. Nothing wrong with that however as all members of this occasional quartet release and perform solo or in any number of configurations beautifully between times and can always be counted on to come together when the need arises. One such event followed the tragic helicopter crash that caused the deaths of concert impresario Bill Graham and his girlfriend in 1991. The tribute concert, played by many of those artists supported most notably by Graham across many years, was organised for San Francisco s Golden Gate Park, less than a week after the tragedy. CSN&Y was an inevitable inclusion in the line-up, having been regulars at Graham s Fillmore venues in the early days and had indeed maintained close contact throughout Bill s life. David Crosby tells a story during the proceedings about asking Bill for money back in the day, and noting that he would always know when Crosby required the cash for drugs on which occasions it would be withheld. This set performed by the foursome features a spirited selection of group classics with the odd solo number thrown in for good measure, one such being one of Bill s all-time favourite songs: Neil Young s Only Love Can Break Your Heart
