The book presents almost 1100 plant types in a total of 367 copperplate engravings. Their order of presentation is based on the approximate blossoming period of the plants they show. In this respect, it does not adhere primarily to botanical principles of order, but reflects instead the practical considerations of the gardening year. The Hortus Eystettensis was thus a mirror of the bishop’s celebrated garden at Eichstätt. With a little imagination, we can step into the garden as we contemplate the engravings.
